We'd like to introduce you to our star ingredient, glycolic acid—the "cane" in CANE + AUSTIN.
What is it?
Glycolic acid is an alpha-hydroxy-acid (AHA) derived from sugarcane. AHAs dissolve the bonds between dead skin cells, acting as exfoliants to remove build up of dirt, debris and dead skin cells. Of all the AHAs, glycolic is the simplest in structure and the smallest; it has the lowest molecular weight. That smaller-than-most molecular makeup allows it to penetrate deep into the skin and tackle everything from fine lines and wrinkles to acne and hyperpigmentation from the inside out.
How does it work?
Glycolic acid works by speeding up cell turnover. When left to its own devices, your skin will naturally fully replenish itself every 28 to 30 days. Speeding up this process allows your skin to recover more quickly from things like acne, hyperpigmentation and discolouration. Glycolic acid also stimulates your skin to create more collagen, which is the protein responsible for keeping your skin looking firm, plump and youthful. This is key for people of all ages, as collagen production not only naturally slows down as we age but gets broken down with exposure to the sun.
Who is it suitable for?
Glycolic acid is effective enough to treat most skin concerns including acne, blackheads, fine lines, oiliness and dullness and gentle enough for even the most sensitive skin types. Using low concentrations of glycolic acid over long periods of time creates a cumulative effect, and your skin will look better the longer you use it. Regardless of skin type, you must always wear sunscreen whenever you are using glycolic acid treatments as like any AHA, glycolic acid will make your skin more sensitive to the sun.
